I read the whole book in one day because I was captivated by the vulnerable and raw way the author details her adventures and also the horrific things life has thrown at her. She is the epitome of strength and dignity, facing everything head on to take control of her own happiness. I just know that this book is going to help others with trauma in their lives. There were several relatable points for me. It was encouraging to know that a lot of what has been on my heart to implement as a parent are the very things she encourages parents to do in order to lessen the chances of similar trauma in future generations. Nature is an incredible tool for developing one’s character and healing. Truly inspiring!

THERE ARE MANY TRIGGER WARNINGS IN THIS BOOK: rape, incest, and detailed insights into hunting

In Andraya Grangroth’s memoir, What’s Her Wild, the author details an equally idiclic and traumatizing childhood, growing up in the ultra-strict religion known as Laestadian Lutheran Christianity. As the eleventh of fourteen children, Draya learned young the lessons of all-hands-on-deck regarding household chores and growing, gathering, and hunting food. She also learned the nightmare of a cult-like religion wherein a sin of any kind is absolved by simply asking for forgiveness and then never spoken of again; including rape and incest.

Through years of self deprecation, insecurity, and self-loathing, Draya clawed her way from the brainwashing religion while she did the work to heal herself and try to retain a relationship with her family. Continually running back to and falling into her comfort place of the wilderness, Draya puts her lifetime of skills to work with a dream job of being a small business owner as a hunting guide in the mountains of Colorado.

What’s Her Wild is a very fast read, but it is not for the sensitive. Grangroth pulls no punches when she calls people out who have wronged her or people she knows. She is graphic in her depictions of hunting, killing, and cleaning game, and she is open about her abuse. While the subjects at time might be difficult to read, Grangroth is good at reminding the reader that this is her story and that she is not suggesting you must understand her path.

This was a surprise read for me — in a good way. I came away with a message helpful for all people: You don’t have to live your trauma alone.

FUN SIDE NOTE: I was fortunate to meet this powerhouse woman when I was at a camp for adult cancer survivors of cancer. Andraya was a whitewater raft guide on one of our excursions and I was fortunate enough to be in her boat. As with many camps, we all used nicknames; Andraya was known on the river as Forteener (as one of 14 children). At that time, Andraya was fairly fresh out of her family and church situation and just kicking around the idea of a book. She trusted me with a few of her first draft chapters. I had no idea at the time what a success her work would be.

Andraya’s story is a lifesaving one.
I was filled with emotions while reading this and read the entire book in one sitting.
She is an amazing person who has walked through hell and back as well as a world class guide -amazing woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Writings of a warrior: traumas, to a world of graciousness and true grit of a female warrior!

The way Draya writes her whole world is unlike anything I’ve read. It’s beautifully powerful to hear how she crawls out of such a black space, creating her own light and sharing the healing of nature with others. Her story is moving and emotional and relatable in many aspects. 10/10 recommend getting your hands on this wild journey. Not many people get out of bad spots in life no matter the age, I think this is a moving testament to another way of pulling yourself back to ground and coming out on top!
